Troubleshooting tool for geofences

Updated over 2 months ago

This article focuses on troubleshooting faulty/missing geofence entry and exit events. Common reasons this may occur:

  • The geofence radius is too small to register entries and exits.

  • In Location Manager, the external reference is wrong, which leads to tracking issues.

  • (Sygma only) The geofence is only registered to the 084 Sygma Corporate geofence group.

The dashboard enables you to validate and fix geofence data for quick resolutions. Contact EROAD Support if issues persist.

Go to Dashboard > Geofence Insights. This menu item only appears for System Administrators. Focus the dashboard with the following filters.

The default display shows geofences created and modified in the last seven days. When searching for a particular geofence, ensure the date ranges are correct.

The dashboard appears as follows. Use the gear icon shown on the right to customize the column display.

The Last Modified By column indicates:

  • CIP: Ingestion of route and geofence data at midnight

  • Manual Import by DBA: EROAD-assisted import of geofence data

  • System User: Geofence creation or edit by user

Tip: Use the Download Report button to download a spreadsheet of all the raw data that you can then sort and filter. The dashboard creates pages, so you cannot view and filter all geofences at once.

Circular Geofence Radius Is Zero

Sysco sends routes at midnight and circular geofences are automatically created with a radius of 250 feet if they don't already exist. User error may occur if a user edits a geofence in Location Manager, or creates a geofence.

Geofences must be large enough to register vehicle entries and exits.

Small geofences may indicate a soft-delete. A user may shrink a geofence size because they want to keep it in the system, unused, rather than re-creating it later if the customer returns.

Filter by geofence shape Circle first. (Polygon geofences show 0 for the radius, so filter out polygons.) Or, search for the particular geofence with known tracking issues. The following image shows a downloaded .csv spreadsheet with raw data.

External References Don't Match

Tracking issues can occur if the external references shown in Location Manager don't match what you see in the dashboard. To validate the external reference, search for the geofence, note the external reference, and then go to Location Manager.

See "What To Do When You Need to Fix (Edit) a Geofence" below.

What To Do When You Need to Fix (Edit) a Geofence

When you see an anomaly that needs to be fixed—such as the wrong radius or a missing address—or need to validate external references, go to Location Manager.

1. Copy the geofence title as shown in the dashboard or spreadsheet.

2. Go to Admin > Location Manager, and under the Location tab, paste the geofence title into the Search field and click Search.

3. Click Edit Settings and make your corrections.

4. Click Save.

084 Sygma Corporate Geofences

All Sygma geofences should be associated with two geofence groups: 084 Sygma Corporate and the OpCo geofence group. Check that Sygma geofences are installed in both locations; otherwise the OpCo site won't see the geofence's information.

1. Filter the data by "084." Dashboard view:

2. Copy the geofence title as shown in the dashboard or spreadsheet.

3. Go to Admin > Location Manager, and under the Location tab, paste the geofence title into the Search field and click Search.

4. Click Edit Settings > Groups.

5. If you see only 084 Sygma Corporate under Assigned Groups, drag the associated OpCo site group over from the Available Groups list.

6. Recommended: Assign the OpCo site as the Primary group so the geofence won't appear as an 084 site anymore. This will lessen confusion in the future.

7. Click Save.

Tip for Working With Downloaded Raw Data

To enable easier filtering after downloading a spreadsheet, in Excel, select Data > Filter. This adds dropdown arrows to the column headers. Selecting a dropdown provides filtering options.

For example, to find the 084 Sygma Corporate geofences.

To display circular geofences.
